Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club

Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Medal of Honor
Awarded during the Annual Juried Exhibition for all media.

History

The club is named for Catharine Lorillard Wolfe (1828-1887), an American philanthropist and scholar and the only woman represented among the 106 founding members of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1887 she left her painting collection, with an endowment for its maintenance, to the Metropolitan Museum. This was the beginning of the museum's European painting department. Ms. Wolfe also willed money to Grace Church in New York City to be used for some form of "women's work." In 1896 the club was established to support young women art students. The students advanced to professionalism, and the club was reorganized to extend educational and exhibition opportunities nationally.

In keeping with the philanthropic spirit of the club's namesake, the Annual Exhibition opens with a Preview Benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's travel fund. Curators from the Metropolitan usually speak at the preview and at the club's Awards Dinner.
