The following information was provided by the artist unless otherwise noted.
Marilyn Weiss has been exhibiting her distinctive works of art professionally in solo, invitational, and juried shows for more than three decades throughout the United States and Europe. She has also been recognized by her peers with many prestigious awards and honors.
Weiss serves on the Executive Board of the National Association of Women Artists, as well as being involved in numerous other art organizations. She is included among the most prominent collagists in The Collage Handbook and is listed in Who's Who in American Art and Who's Who of American Women.
Weiss has the unique ability to work in many media from acrylic paint, ink or graphite on canvas or paper, printmaking, to making her own handmade paper. In virtually all of these media she constantly explores the variety and nuances of collage. As a self-professed "scavenger," she uses and reuses any material she feels an immediate reaction to, most often materials drawn from her life - recycled bits of fabric, threads, yarns, fragments of old books, oriental calligraphy, and found objects. Despite their clear provenance, every trace of materials in her collage always has Weiss' unique signature.
Weiss' personal and almost introspective vision entices a direct involvement from the viewer. The dominant feminine theme and the use of the female form is central to her art. However, "there is no message to convey," says the artist. "The work should provoke the viewer to see whatever is relevant to him or her." Her works evoke a sense of the entire emotional spectrum.
